How does LS-120 Technology work?

Like conventional diskette technology, LS-120 technology is a magnetic information storage system. Unlike conventional diskettes, however, each LS-120 diskette has a servo pattern etched into it at the factory. LS-120 drives use a laser to read this servo pattern and align the read/write head. This precise positioning allows LS-120 technology to use 2,490 data tracks per inch, compared with just 135 tracks per inch for conventional 3.5" diskettes.

Combined with a high-density metal particle (MP) pigment and dual-layer coating technology, this allows a single LS-120 diskette to hold 120 MB of data. Plus, the "dual-gap" head of LS-120 drives allows them to read and write conventional 3.5" HD and DD diskettes.
